    On November 25, 2019, Cambridge-Abcam, UK, was pleased to announce its participation in a breakthrough methodology paper published in Nature Methods 1, which outlines a new technology that promises to significantly improve our understanding of autophagy (the "waste management system" for cells).
    As part of a long-term collaboration between Ryan Charles Russell and Abcam, a highly sensitive RabMAb™ rabbit monoclonal antibody has been successfully developed to detect key steps in the formation of autophagy, the protein ATG16L1 phosphate. Autophagy can promote cell removal of aging and functionally abnormal parts as well as potentially harmful ones. The process involves many life-threatening chronic diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.
    in the Nature Methods paper, a team at the University of Ottawa described a method that used Abcam's RabMAb antibody (ab195242) to detect phosphate forms of ATG16L1 through important protein detection experiments such as protein imprinting, immunofluorescence, and immunoglobation. In the cells tested, the level of phosphate ATG16L1 measured using antibodies is directly related to the autophagy rate of the cells, which means that the level of phosphate ATG16L1 is also a sensitive tool for studying the induction rate of new autophagy or active autophagy.
    RabMAb platform combines the unique properties of the rabbit immune system with Abcam's antibody platform to produce recombinant rabbit monoclonal antibodies with ultra-high affinity and specificity. Recombinant antibodies are more repeatable and more consistent between batches.
