    Scientists build better antibiotics

    Recently, researchers described a method of synthesized into a new antibiotic that may have prevented resistance. Studies have shown that one of the compounds synthesized using this method is effective against drug-resistant strains in bacterial infection mouse models. The paper was published in Nature.
    currently, most antibiotics used clinically are derived from natural products, but resistance mechanisms occur during collaborative evolution. For example, a family of antibiotics called streptococcus A is thought to be ineffective against strains that express Virginia mycomycin acetyl transferase (Vatase), which invigorates the antibiotic.
    Ian Seiple and colleagues at the University of California, San Francisco, reported a method of synthesized streptococcus A that avoids resistance caused by Vatase.
    synthetic antibiotics in the lab is a long process because these complex molecules require multiple specially designed chain reactions. Seiple and colleagues used a modular approach to speeding up the process. They used a basic stent based on the naturally occurring streptococcus A, and then added interchangeable molecular building blocks (which bind to the cellular composition of the bacteria, but are not easily combined with Vat) to produce a total of 62 streptococcus A-likes.in an opinion paper published in the same journal, Martin Burke of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his collaborators argue that the work could help develop streptococcus A, which avoids Vat-mediated resistance while maintaining potuity of antimicrobial activity.
