, a paper published online in Nature reports on the origins of today's citrus fruits, providing a new evolutionary framework for this group of common plants that challenge current taxonomic thinking.
citrus fruit trees are the most widely grown fruit trees in the world, but their origins and history have not been clear. For the study, Guohong Wu and colleagues at the U.S. Department of Energy's Joint Genomics Institute analyzed the genomes of 60 different citrus varieties, including Australian finger limes and oranges, 30 of which were newly sequenced.
researchers report that today's citrus fruit trees originate from at least 10 natural citrus species. In the late Mesocenter 6-8 million years ago, citrus diverged and spread rapidly in Southeast Asia, a shift associated with the weakening of the Asian summer monsoon. Australian citrus began to divide later, crossing the Wallace Line, the transition zone between Asia and Australia, about 4 million years ago.
also studied the domestication of wild citrus, suggesting that the grapefruit gene may also contribute to oranges. (Source: Science Network Zhang Zhang)
