Recently, the Zhu Shujia research group of the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligent Technology (Institute of Neuroscience) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences analyzed a series of human-derived NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor GluN1-GluN2A subtypes.

As an important class of excitatory ionotropic glutamate receptors, NMDA receptors play an important role in the development and formation of the nervous system and synaptic plasticity

The researchers analyzed the structure of a series of NMDA receptors in different binding states of small molecules through cryo-electron microscopy

It is reported that the researchers also found a new small molecule binding site on the NMDA receptor for the first time

The researchers said that this work has enriched the structure and pharmacology of the NMDA receptor, fully explained its gating mechanism as an ion channel, and provided an important theoretical basis for drug design and new drug development
