A new study published in the world's leading medical journal shows that the risk and severity of myopia in children and young people is related to screen time

The open-access study was published this week in the journal The Lancet Digital Health and was conducted by researchers and eye health experts from Singapore, Australia, China, and the United Kingdom, including from Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) Professor Rupert Byrne

After analyzing and combining existing studies with statistics, the researchers found that long-term use of smart devices (such as watching mobile phones) is related to an increase in the risk of myopia by about 30%.

This study was conducted in a situation where millions of children around the world spent a lot of time using distance learning methods after schools closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Professor Byrne is a professor of ophthalmology at the Institute of Vision and Eyes, Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom.

“Due to school closures, our children spend more time watching screens than ever before.
