Nigeria signed a power cooperation agreement with Germany-based Siemens on Monday to improve the West African country's grid capacity
.
According to reports, this is a partnership between the governments of Nigeria and Germany and Siemens to upgrade Nigeria's transmission and distribution infrastructure
.
Through this agreement, Siemens is expected to help Nigeria achieve a reliable power supply
of 11,000 MW in two phases by 2023.
According to the plan, Siemens will help Nigeria achieve 7,000 megawatts of reliable power supply in 2021 and 11,000 megawatts by 2023
.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel plans to visit Nigeria in August, when cooperation in the power sector will be the focus of
negotiations between the two sides.
Although Nigeria is fortunate to have large resources of natural gas, hydro and solar power, the country is still striving to achieve the reliable, economical and quality electricity supply
needed for economic growth, industrialization and poverty alleviation.
Currently, there is an imbalance
between the amount of electricity generated in Nigeria and the amount available to consumers.
Even, despite more than 13,000 megawatts of generating capacity, on average only 4,000 megawatts reliably reach consumers
.
As a result, Nigeria seeks to develop a transmission and distribution infrastructure system that will eventually achieve a power generation capacity and grid capacity of 25,000 megawatts
