South Africa's Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has begun tenders to build 2 GW of generating capacity, including renewables, in seeking to improve its electricity supply

The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy said in the invitation to request for proposals (RFPs) that the goal is to mitigate risks that will help the country fill short-term power supply gaps
.
The tender was conducted
under the Independent Power Producer Procurement Program for Risk Reduction (RMIPPPP).
The tender is open to a variety of energy sources and technologies, including renewables, on the condition that the plants are fully operational
by the end of June 2022.
According to the announcement, the proposed technical solution must be dispatchable and capable of providing "a range of support services to grid system operators.

The South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy said: "The objective of RMIPPPP is not only to alleviate current power supply constraints, but also to reduce the utilization
of diesel-based peak generators.

The government estimates that the tender is expected to attract around R40 billion ($2.
4 billion) in investment in
the region.
