South African coal producer Exxaro Resources is studying the possibility
of building an 84 MW solar power plant at the Grootegluk open-pit coal mine in Limpopo province.
The company's newly appointed managing director of energy, Roland Tatnall, said Exxaro had been considering using renewable energy to run its mines, and Grootegluk was just one example

Tatnall said the particular project is currently in the research phase
.
It is estimated that installing an 84 MW solar power plant can reduce electricity costs by at least 12% and reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by about 15%
across the group.
Meanwhile, CEO Nombasa Tsengwa said the company has been reducing the number of trucks used in its pit lanes and plans to cut it by about 10 percent
in the future.
At the same time, the company also has plans to use hydrogen fuel cells to reduce carbon emissions
