South Korean battery maker Kokam announced on April 26 that it has developed a new drone battery with 20% higher energy density than the Panasonic battery used by Tesla, which can extend the operation time of the drone by 20%.
The report states that the life of the drone depends on the battery
.
The battery determines the drone's carrying capacity and flight range
.
Kokam's new battery has an energy density of 265 watt-hours per kilogram, while a standard drone battery has an energy density of 150 to 200 watt-hours per kilogram
.
By comparison, the Panasonic battery used by Tesla has an energy density of 210 watt-hours per kilogram, which Kokam says is 20 percent lower than the company's
battery.
Ike Hong, vice president of Kokam's Power Solutions Division, said: "In other words, drones can run 20%
longer if they use our batteries.
Compared to the Panasonic battery used by Tesla, we can free up more space and reduce the weight
of the fuselage.
”
Ike Hong also said: "For military, commercial and industrial drone customers, they want drones to have longer flight times and more features without sacrificing reliability and performance
.
”
Kokam was founded in 1989 and employs 260 people
.
The company supplied batteries
for the world's first all-electric submarine and the Deep Sea Challenger.
Its customers include Trimble, which specializes in drone manufacturing for the agricultural market, and Eca Group, which makes drones for the defense and security sector
