Spanish researchers have successfully developed a new type of ceramic film that can be used as an antibacterial coating to effectively inhibit pathogenic bacteria on the surface of stainless steel products.
It is expected to be used in medical equipment, human implant materials, public health facilities, food processing equipment and other fields .

Stainless steel materials have good rigidity, processability and corrosion resistance, and are widely used.
However, after repeated use and cleaning and disinfection of stainless steel products, the surface coating will wear out, and bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus will easily breed, which will lead to infectious diseases.

The bulletin issued by the Public University of Navarre in Spain stated that a research team led by the school’s engineer Javier Oses has developed a high-hardness ceramic coating with a small amount of antibacterial metals such as silver and copper added to it.
The layer has the advantages of high hardness, low friction coefficient, good wear resistance and stable chemical properties.

The bulletin said that using physical vapor deposition technology, researchers deposited a uniform and dense ceramic film on the surface of the stainless steel substrate.
On the basis of retaining the original characteristics of the stainless steel material, this coating can prevent the growth of various pathogens, and no side effects have been found.
It is especially suitable for reducing the rate of bacterial infection caused by surgical instruments and prostheses.

The researchers said that the ceramic antibacterial coating has strong durability and low cost, which is suitable for large-scale production.
Sinks, tableware, washing machine drums, surgical instruments, orthopedic implants, etc.
that are closely related to daily life are expected to use this new material.
