Blue light (BL), characterized by high-energy short-wave light, has aroused interest

On the other hand, recent studies in Drosophila melanogaster have shown that long-term exposure to BL throughout the life cycle leads to accelerated aging, manifested by shortened lifespan and neurodegeneration of the brain, suggesting that BL can damage cells and tissues

Therefore, this study aims to study the effect of chronic BL on the metabolic pathway of the eye (EYA2) mutated Drosophila in order to focus on extraretinal tissue

Mortality curves compared to the numerical grade test showed that the survival of Drosophila was significantly reduced

    The researchers next evaluate neurodegeneration.

The researchers used LC-MS and GC-MS to compare metabolomics

These drosophila also showed episodes of neurodegeneration, and the analysis detected significantly lower levels of several neurotransmitters, including glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), suggesting that BL disrupted brain homeostasis

In summary, natural light is necessary for life, but prolonged exposure to artificial light with high levels of blue wavelengths is a growing concern for human health, especially in retinal pathology
