    Research once again shows that Chinese people have high salt intake

    LONDON, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese adults have consumed more than 10 grams of salt per day on average over the past 40 years, more than twice the World Health Organization's recommended amount, according to a new study released by Queen Mary University of London. Previously, the Chinese government has encouraged the whole society to participate in salt reduction.
    In a paper published in the new issue of the Journal of the American Heart Association, researchers at Queen Mary College said they analyzed a large amount of published data on salt intake in China, involving 900 children and 26,000 adults, and found that salt intake among Chinese residents has remained high over the past 40 years, as well as differences between the North and the South.
    the average daily intake of salt in northern China was 11.2 grams, down from 12.8 grams in the 1980s, according to a recent study. The researchers believe this includes the Chinese government's efforts to raise awareness of salt reduction between the whole population and the gradual decline in people's dependence on foods such as pickles because of the richness of vegetables through the year.
    the downward trend is not in southern China. Salt intake among southerners has increased from an average of 8.8 grams per day in the 1980s to 10.2 grams today. The researchers believe this may be due to government efforts to reduce salt offset by factors such as people eating more processed foods and eating more out.
