Gemini virus is a type of plant single-stranded DNA virus transmitted by insect vectors, causing devastating damage to economic and food crops such as tomato, tobacco, cotton, corn, wheat, and cassava on a global scale
.
Geminivirus genome size is about 2.
This study is based on the accumulation of previous studies on geminiviruses, combined with bioinformatics analysis, found that there are generally small open reading frames (ORFs) with unknown functions in the genomes of geminiviruses from different genera
.
In-depth research on tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), which is a serious production hazard, found that small ORFs can be transcribed and expressed during viral infection, showing specific subcellular locations, such as localization in the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and Golgi Body and other organelles
.
Some small ORFs also have a transmembrane structure and are related to disease
.
For example, the new gene V3 encoded by TYLCV is located in the Golgi apparatus and functions as an RNA silencing suppressor during virus infection of plants.
These research results expand the understanding of geminiviruses, and will greatly advance the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of the interactions between geminiviruses and host plants and even insect mediators
.
They are also of far-reaching significance to the field of plant biology .
