Omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated fatty acids found in fish and some plants.

A research team at the University of Louvain in Belgium once discovered that cells in the acidic microenvironment of tumors use lipids instead of glucose as an energy source to promote their proliferation

Using a three-dimensional tumor model, they found that the more unsaturated fatty acids in the culture medium, the more likely the tumor cells were to die due to a mechanism called ferroptosis

Usually in the acidic microenvironment of tumors, cells store fat in the form of lipid droplets to prevent their oxidation, and DHA and related polyunsaturated fatty acids will preferentially accumulate in lipid droplets

Moreover, the researchers found that if the tumor cells are treated with an inhibitor that inhibits the formation of lipid droplets in the cells, it can further enhance the iron death caused by DHA

In mouse tumor models, they also found that eating foods rich in DHA can reduce tumor proliferation, while using lipid metabolism inhibitors or iron death-inducing compounds can further enhance the effect
