Recently, SunPower launched a new rooftop solar + storage bundle, aiming to create a "virtual power plant" in New York, including 1.
8 MW of photovoltaic installed capacity and 4 MW of battery storage
.
The $15 million project is part of New York's Energy Vision Reform (REV) initiative, with Sunverge providing lithium-ion battery storage systems, SunPower leasing its solar panels, and utility Con Edison managing grid power
for storing electricity.
The project is designed to integrate more solar energy into the local grid so that Con Edison can dispatch and store power
to customers during peak hours.
In the event of a power outage, residents can still use it
.
The pilot project will serve 300 residential users in Brooklyn and Queens, New York, with Con Edison targeting owner-occupied single-family homes
.
Tenants involved in renting SunPower solar systems (from 7kW to 9kW) will receive Sunverge's suitably sized batteries – the company offers its 6kWh and 19.
4kWh storage systems
.
Initially owned by Con Edison, the storage system allows the utility to test real-time applications, peak shaving, frequency modulation and technical capabilities
in this area.
