SunPower and Total's Pelican solar project will provide 42 percent of the metro system's electricity needs, while wind farms will provide another 18 percent

SunPower, Total and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet have announced a solar project that will provide 42 percent
of the electricity used by the Santiago de Chile metro system.
SunPower plans to start construction of the Pelican solar power plant near the border area of Koquimbo and Atacama, which is expected to be completed
by the end of 2017.
Under the PPA, the plant will provide 300 gigawatt-hours of electricity
per year.
SunPower will design and build the plant using its Oasis Power Block component system, which will additionally provide operations and maintenance
through its robotic cleanup program.
In addition to the Pelican solar project, the San Diego Metro will be powered by the San Juan Wind Project, providing 18 percent of the system power
for its metro.
The two projects will meet 60% of the metro's
electricity demand.
The two renewable energy projects have a total investment of $500 million
These projects will enter service in 2018 and will serve the subway for 15 years

The remaining electricity demand for the metro will be provided
by Chilectra, Chilean electricity company.
