Sweden has closed its last coal-fired power plant, making it the third European country
to complete its fossil fuel phase.
On April 16, the KVV6 plant at Stockholm Exergi AB in Värtaverket, which has been supplying heat and electricity to Stockholm, Sweden's last coal-fired power plant
, ceased operations on April 16.
Austria also recently shut down its last coal-fired power plant, and the first European country to phase out coal power was Belgium
.
Other European countries are expected to phase out coal power in the coming years, including the UK, France, Portugal and Ireland
.
Sweden aims to close all coal-fired power plants
by 2022.
Anders Egelrud, CEO of Stockholm Exergi, said: "We have to stop using all fossil fuels, we have made a huge change since Stockholm was almost completely dependent on fossils 30 to 40 years ago, and now we are moving away from carbon dependence and continuing to move
towards an energy system based entirely on renewable energy.

Other European countries that are about to phase out coal in the power sector include Slovakia, Greece and Italy
