Petrochemical production in Taiwan faced further disruption as producers rolled out rolling blackouts around mid-May while still dealing with a prolonged drought
.
On May 13, a power outage at the Kaohsiung petrochemical hub power plant prompted power-saving measures
.
The outage last week forced the closure of some petrochemical plants, including Taita Chemical and Kaofu Chemical's polystyrene (PS) plants, both of which have an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes
.
The Taita plant is expected to restart sometime this week, while the Kaofu plant could resume production around the end of May, market sources said
.
At Mailiao, another petrochemical base in Taiwan, production has been largely unaffected by rolling island-wide power outages, as most factories have their own generators
.
Power is expected to remain tight for most of next week as the heatwave began in early May, the Taiwan Power Co.
said
.
Temperatures have been peaking around 40 degrees Celsius in parts of the island since the beginning of the month
.
Taiwan has also been battling a prolonged drought - the worst in 56 years - exacerbating problems for petrochemical producers as they limit the availability of water for industry
.
The Taiwanese government said on May 19 that it would tighten water restrictions in Hsinchu and Taichung from June 1 if there was no heavy rainfall at that time
.
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the reservoir capacity in central and southern Taiwan is less than 5%
