GENEVA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua Liu Qu) World Health Organization Director-General Tan Desser said on the 24th that 172 countries and regions have said they will join the WHO-led COVAX Global New Crown Vaccine Program, with the goal of providing at least 2 billion doses of safe and effective new crown vaccine worldwide by 2021.
Tandese said at a press conference the same day, the current COVAX program to support the new crown vaccine has nine, WHO is continuing to evaluate and optimize these vaccines to ensure the best product mix. Nine more vaccines are in the long-term evaluation phase.
said the COVAX program aims to deliver at least 2 billion doses of vaccines to the world by 2021, many of which are now in the final stages of clinical trials,
and we all hope to have a variety of safe and effective successful candidates."
latest research suggests that global competition for vaccines could lead to an exponential spike in vaccine prices compared to efforts similar to COVAX's efforts to work together to develop and obtain new crown vaccines, Mr. Tandesser said. Since a small number of countries are likely to receive most of the vaccine supply, this could also lead to a prolonged outbreak of the new crown.
He said the COVAX program includes mechanisms for jointly procuring and sharing the risks of multiple new coronary vaccines, which will be available to participating countries, whether low- and middle-income or high-income, regardless of which vaccine proves safe and effective in the future.
Tandese stressed that in the case of limited initial availability of vaccines, priority should be given to ensuring that vaccines are made available to high-risk groups, including health workers, people over 65 years of age, and those at higher risk of new coronary deaths due to pre-existing conditions.
