The main factors affecting the sulfonation reaction of the copolymer spheres are as follows
(1) The structure of the copolymer
The commonly used sulfonation reagent, sulfuric acid, cannot swell the non-polar styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer, and cannot enter the copolymer to carry out the sulfonation reaction
The structure of the macroporous resin facilitates the diffusion of sulfuric acid
The difference in the structure of the copolymer caused by the degree of crosslinking and the porogen has an effect on the sulfonation rate, which is more significant when the sulfonation temperature is lower
(2) Composition of crosslinking agent
The divinylbenzene isomer has a great influence on the structure of the copolymer, so it can significantly affect the rate of the sulfonation reaction
(3) Sulfonation temperature
The sulfonation reaction rate of cross-linked polystyrene increases with the increase of temperature
(4) Swelling agent
Industrially, dichloroethane is used as a swelling agent to prepare strong acid resins, but this is not the best choice
The sulfonation reaction rate of the macroporous copolymer is faster, and the influence of the swelling agent is much smaller
The swelling agent not only affects the rate of functional grouping of the copolymer, but also affects the performance of the product
(5) The influence of polar monomers on the sulfonation rate of the copolymer
The addition of a small amount of polar monomer can greatly improve the sulfonation performance of the copolymer
It can be seen from the above description that the sulfonation of cross-linked copolymer spheres is much more complicated than the sulfonation of small molecular aromatic hydrocarbons
After cross-linked polystyrene is sulfonated, it changes from lipophilic to strong hydrophilic
[Application] Mainly used for hard water softening, desalinated water preparation, pure water and high purity water preparation, and also used for hydrometallurgy to separate and purify rare elements, and also used for refining and purification in catalysis, sugar making, pharmacy and organic industry analysis of chemistry chromatography and the like
