PHNOM PENH, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's total crop output exceeded 5 billion U.S. dollars last year, officials said Wednesday.
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries issued a report the same day, said that in 2020 the country's agricultural sector achieved a good harvest, rice and other crops a total output of 18.47 million tons, the total output value of more than 5 billion U.S. dollars.
, non-rice crops are worth $2.17 billion.
Cambodia's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries noted that, in addition to rice, Cambodia's main crops include cassava, which produced 12.04 million tons last year, with an output value of $1.1 billion; cashews, which produced 240,000 tons, with a value of $400 million; mangoes, which produced 1.74 million tons, with a value of $500 million; bananas, which produced 470,000 tons, with a value of $400 million; and Longan, which produced 190,000 tons and produced $100 million.
According to the National Bank of Cambodia, Cambodia's economy was hit hard last year by the outbreak of neo-crown pneumonia, with major economic sectors such as ready-to-wear and footwear, tourism and construction contracting, leading to negative economic growth (-1.9%), while some sectors, particularly agriculture, remained strong, helping to offset the impact of the outbreak on the country's economy.
one of the main reasons for the sector's strong performance is that it absorbs large numbers of factory workers who have lost their jobs as a result of the outbreak as labour force, thereby increasing agricultural production, according to an analysis by Cambodian experts.
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries predicts that the entry into force of the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement will boost Cambodian agricultural exports to the Chinese market and attract more foreign companies to invest in Cambodian agriculture.
