Eating too much salt increases the risk of high blood pressure and has been widely accepted in society. As a basic principle of healthy eating, "salt reduction" has also been recognized by the general public. However, the effect of salt on the taste of food is too great - for those accustomed to "heavy taste", salt reduction measures that reduce salt content are difficult to accept.
is not easy to "reduce salt without reducing taste", low sodium salt is one of the most common options.
, however, the acceptance of low-sodium salt among Chinese consumers is not high. Many people think that low-sodium salt is "not salty enough" so they need to use more, just to deceive themselves. In addition, many people worry that the potassium in it will be "health-harming", the packaging marked "inappropriate kidney patients", adding to this concern.
recently published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) by Peking University and leading Academic Institutions in the United States and Britain, showing that the promotion of potassium-rich salts, or low sodium salts, can bring huge benefits to the Chinese public.
principle of low-sodium salts
common salts are nearly 100% pure sodium chloride, from which the salty salt comes from sodium ions.
used to refer to potassium-rich salts in this new study, more commonly referred to as low-sodium salts.
salts on the market generally contain 65% sodium chloride and 25% potassium chloride 10% magnesium sulfate. If low-sodium salts were used instead of regular salts of the same weight, sodium intake would be reduced by 35%. However, potassium chloride is only about 70% salty than sodium chloride, and magnesium sulfate is not salty, in which the main coordination of taste, so the salt of low sodium salt is lower than ordinary salt. Generally speaking, low sodium salt reduces sodium by 35%, maintaining more than 80% salinity. In general, low sodium salt makes sense to reduce sodium intake while achieving the same saltyness.
is potassium-rich health hazards
concerns about "low sodium salt harming health" come from potassium. The metabolism of potassium in patients with kidney disease is not perfect, and high potassium intake may lead to "high blood potassium", so low sodium salt will not be suitable for these people.
many people understand this label as a low sodium salt that "causes" kidney disease or high blood potassium. This is a false perception.
, "high sodium" is a risk factor for high blood pressure, as is "low potassium". Adequate potassium intake, like reduced sodium intake, helps prevent high blood pressure.
any nutrients too high can be harmful to health. However, most people do not have high potassium intake.
, the scientific community has not yet reached a consensus on the appropriate potassium intake in the human body, the daily recommended amount of different institutions vary greatly. The recommended intake in China is 2 grams, while the recommended intake in the United States for 2019 is 3.4 grams for adult men and 2.6 grams for women.
note that this is the recommended amount of "should be consumed" rather than the "safe limit". For the general population, the usual "high potassium" can be properly excreted, so China and the United States have no safe limit or maximum intake of potassium.
even if you consume 10 grams of low-sodium salt a day, you're eating less than 1.6 grams of potassium, plus potassium from other sources in your diet, which is good for the general population.
, the health benefits of low sodium salt for the general population are reduced sodium intake on the one hand, and a certain amount of potassium on the other. Both are beneficial for the prevention and control of hypertension.
sodium reduction is important to everyone
The central guiding value of this study is to reduce sodium intake, which is important for controlling high blood pressure and reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease. If low-sodium salts were promoted throughout society, the number of deaths from cardiovascular disease could be reduced by 11 per cent to more than 450,000 per year.
For patients with chronic kidney disease, using low sodium salt can be considered a "double-edged sword", but the benefits of the "blade" is sharper than the other side of the injury, so in the "unclear whether they have chronic kidney disease" premise, the use of low sodium salt instead of ordinary salt is still "benefits greater than risk." The best case scenario, however, is knowing that you have chronic kidney disease, and there are other ways to reduce sodium and control potassium.
