Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Didiza recently announced a new 2021 statutory citrus export tax, which will increase from 74 cents per 15 kg cartons in 2020 to 1.64 rand per 15 kg in 2021 and to 1.68 rand, 1.73 rand and 1.7 rand in 2022-2024, the South African Citizen newspaper reported on December 28.
the statutory export tax aims to maintain South Africa's status as one of the world's largest producers of fresh citrus.
Southern African Citrus Growers Association (CGA) welcomed the move, saying it would bring in an additional 134 million rand for South Africa.
the organization indicated that the funds derived from these taxes would be used for research, upgrading the sector, increasing market access and administrative, logistical and information, and that improvements in research would take the South African citrus export industry to the next level and provide the Government with all the information it needed to complete market access negotiations.
