The United Arab Emirates said last week that its first nuclear reactor would be commissioned in late 2019 or early 2020, further delaying the commissioning of the first nuclear power plant in the Middle East
.
According to the state-run WAM news agency, citing the UAE Nuclear Energy Corporation, the first of four reactors at the Barakah plant, which will operate by the end of 2019 (or) the end of 2020, has been completed
.
The first reactor was scheduled to come online last year, but was initially delayed until 2018 to allow time for regulatory approval and a full safety inspection
.
But the latest postponement plan did not announce any reason
.
Emirates Nuclear Energy said the second reactor was 93 percent complete, the third 83 percent complete and the fourth 72 percent
complete.
The $20 billion Barakah nuclear power plant, west of Abu Dhabi, was built
by a consortium led by Korea Electric Power Company.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the four reactors, when fully operational, should be able to generate 5,600 megawatts of electricity, or about 25% of the UAE's
demand.
The UAE says nuclear and renewables will account for 27%
of electricity supply by 2021.
By 2050, the UAE will generate half of its energy from clean energy

Saudi Arabia, the world's largest crude oil exporter, plans to build up to 16 nuclear reactors, but those projects have yet to begin
