Original title: Diet containing selenium polyester osteoporosis
A new study by Xiangya Hospital of Central South University in China found a correlation between selenium intake from diet and osteoporosis.
researchers selected 6,267 participants from the Health Examination Center at Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, and nurses collected and collated information about their lifestyle and demographics. All participants were over the age of 40, and the researchers conducted detailed questionnaires on the frequency of food intake, paying particular attention to other parameters that affect osteoporosis, such as alcohol consumption, smoking status, body mass index and levels of physical activity.
overall, 9.6 per cent of participants had osteoporosis, with 2.3 per cent of men and 19.7 per cent of women. The researchers divided the participants into four groups, from high to low, based on their daily dietary intake of selenium. The results showed that people with the least selenium intake had the highest risk of osteoporosis, and there was a negative correlation between selenium intake and the risk of osteoporosis. Even after taking into account factors such as age, gender and body mass index, the correlation was significant. The findings were published in the journal BMC Musculoskeletal Disease.
researchers say the activity of immune molecules such as cytokines promotes the progression of osteoporosis, and selenium inhibits this molecule. In addition, low selenium content increases oxidative stress, which accelerates the onset of osteoporosis. Xiao Zhongyan
