The world's largest solar PV project under construction, Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has announced its fifth phase of a 900-megawatt
tender.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority DEWA said that the eligibility application CG/007/2019 has been issued and interested bidders must submit their applications
by 31 March 2019.
Dubai Solar Power Park has been a global leader
in the development of ultra-large-scale solar power projects at extremely low tax rates.
The first phase of the park, with a capacity of 13 MW, was commissioned in 2013 and is being developed
by First Solar.
The second phase, with a capacity of 200 megawatts, was won by a consortium of ACWA Power and TSK components at the lowest price of 5.
98 cents per kilowatt-hour
.
The project, which opened in March 2017, cost $326 million, enough to power 50,000 households
.
In the third phase, with a capacity of 800 megawatts, the consortium led by Masdar successfully won the bid
at the lowest bid of 2.
99 cents per kilowatt-hour at the time.
The first phase of the project, 200 MW, was commissioned in May 2018, and the entire third phase of 800 MW is expected to be fully commissioned
next year.
The fourth phase is awarded to a consortium of ACWA Power and Shanghai Electric
.
The tender provided the project developer with 600 MW of capacity and the winning bid price was 7.
3 cents/kWh, the lowest ever project in the world for solar thermal power projects
.
As a result, the consortium also secured a contract
to build 250 MW of solar PV capacity at 2.
4 cents/kWh.
The first phase of the project is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2020
.
DEWA plans to increase the total installed capacity of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park to 5 gigawatts
by 2030.
To date, DEWA has auctioned and allocated a total capacity of 1.
95 gigawatts, which will increase to 2.
85 gigawatts
after the fifth phase of the auction.
In contrast, the Abu Dhabi Electricity and Water Authority (now Emirates Hydro) has auctioned 1.
17 gigawatts of solar PV capacity so far and has just issued a new tender
for 2 gigawatts of solar PV capacity.
