Recently, the European Commission has approved six backup power schemes to ensure the safety of
power supply.

The electricity capacity mechanisms of Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy and Poland comply with rules
to maintain competition in the single market, the commission said.

The Belgian and German proposals are for strategic reserves, and only in emergency situations can certain generation capacities
outside the electricity market be activated.

In France and Greece, these programmes have particularly contributed to demand response

In times of power shortage, customers can get paid to reduce electricity
consumption.

Similar initiatives are in place in Italy and Poland, where capacity providers can also purchase usable generation
from users when needed.

Margrethe Vestager, the EU's commissioner for competition policy, said: "Electricity capacity mechanisms can help maintain the security of electricity supply, but they must be designed so as to avoid distorting competition
in energy markets.
