    For a long time, scientists have focused on the composition and function of rumen microbes in ruminants.
    However, the functional analysis of the whole digestive tract microbes on feed utilization efficiency, methane production and host health has not been completed
    .


    Recently, the Institute of Subtropical Agricultural Ecology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the "Institute of Subtropical Ecology"), Nanjing Agricultural University and other units have jointly carried out research on the structure and function of the microbiome of the ruminant digestive tract.


    Seven representative ruminants including cows, buffalo, yak, goat, sheep, roe deer and roe deer were selected for the study, and 370 samples of chyme samples from 10 segments of the entire digestive tract including rumen and small intestine were collected
    .


    For the first time, the project constructed the complete digestive tract microbial gene set of ruminants (non-redundant genes>154 M), and assembled more than 10,000 non-redundant microbial genomes, and identified 8,745 new genomes at the species level


    At the same time, the research team systematically analyzed the distribution of hydrogenases in the assembled microbial genome
    .


    It was found that about 60% of microorganisms in the digestive tract of ruminants encode hydrogenase genes capable of hydrogen metabolism


    "This research has constructed the ruminant hydrogen metabolism microbial genome database for the first time, confirming that the whole digestive tract microorganisms have the ability to metabolize hydrogen extensively, which will provide scientific and technological support for improving feed utilization efficiency and reducing methane emissions
