The Kanawa cable system deployed by French telecommunications service provider Orange to connect French Guiana, Martinique and Guadeloupe will be operational
in January 2019.
Installation of the 1,746-kilometre submarine cable will begin at the end of July, with Orange's cable installation vessel M/V Pierre de Fermat scheduled to leave Brest
on July 14.
The new cable consists of two pairs of fibers that provide a transmission rate
of approximately 5Tbps.
The construction of the new submarine cable is in response to the huge increase in digital activity and the resulting significant increase in data usage, as well as to improve the quality of the network, Orange is deploying its own new fiber-optic submarine cable to connect Martinique and French
Guiana.
In addition, the new system will provide Interconnections and Americas II submarine cables
in Martinique (Le Lamentin) and French Guiana.
The entire system spans 8,200 kilometers and connects Florida, the U.
S.
Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Martinique, Curacao, Trinidad, Venezuela, French Guiana, Suriname and Guyana, and Brazil
.
In addition, the system will interconnect Guadeloupe and Martinique with the Eastern Caribbean Fibre System (ECFS), a submarine cable that connects 14 islands in the eastern Caribbean Sea and provides 7Tbs of cable per fiber pair over 350 kilometers of repeat-free links
