    On October 22, 2022, the State Key Laboratory of Fungi and the National Microbiology Data Center (NMDC) published a report in Nucleic Acid Research.

    to discover new taxa of fungi and name them correctly for the development of fungal taxonomy and the research and application of fungi.
    The establishment of a standardized fungal name registration platform in line with the International Nomenclature Code for Algae, Fungi and Plants will be an effective boost to
    fungal taxonomic research.
    Fungal Names is one of three fungal naming registries authorized by the International Council on Mycological Nomenclature (NCF) to provide a register for the rapid publication of fungal names by scholars around the world for publication

    It currently includes

    of the more than 10,000 periodicals and books published since 1596 10,000 taxa names and 147,000 type specimen/illustration records
    from over 5,000 deposits.
    FN is also a comprehensive fungal knowledge database, integrating fungal nomenclature information with specimens, preservation institutions, publications and taxonomists, providing scholars with multi-source and multi-angle information to understand the history of fungal taxonomy and the latest research progress

    The fungal names database powered by Fungal Names contains records
    of fungal names and taxonomic information spanning more than 400 years.
    Of the total

    species or subspecific unit data and the remaining higher-order taxa data (e.

    were included.
    By name type,

    The paper also counts the trend of fungi names, authors, type specimens, and type calibration over time, and finds that the number of fungi names published may be related to the number of taxonomists, important historical events (World War 2), and the development of DNA barcoding technology.

     

    In the genomics era, Fungal Names will further update the existing system and implement new functions to adapt to the changing fungus naming rules and integrate all aspects of
    fungi-related data.
