Researchers recently studied the chemical interactions between different sizes of gas-phase silica and epoxy resins using ultrasound to improve coatings.
successfully prepared a blank epoxy coating (EC) and a gas-phase silicon dioxide epoxy composite coating (SECC) reinforced with nano (7nm) and micron (0.2-0.3 sm) at different load levels using ultrasonic technology.
SEM analysis showed that nano and micron silicon dioxide fillers were evenly dispersed in the epoxy substate to a load of 3 kg
    in
    .
found that ultrasonic processing led to permanent chemical bonding between epoxy resins and silicon dioxide particles through FT-IR spectroscopy and DSC studies.
quantitative FTIR usually indicates that nano-silicon dioxide is more involved in chemical bonding with epoxy resins than micron silica.
use of nano-silicon dioxide improves corrosion resistance
evaluate coated steel plates with EC or SECC in terms of surface wetting, corrosion resistance, thermal stability and mechanical properties.
, the coating treated with microns of silicon dioxide showed increased hydrophobic properties compared to those revealed by contact angle measurements, as opposed to nano-silicon dioxide samples.
results of salt spray test and thermal weight analysis show that the addition of nano-silica shows the corrosion resistance and thermal stability of the improved epoxy coating compared to microsilicon.
mechanical properties, i.e. scratch hardness, adhesion, impact strength and wear resistance, are improved in the same way.
