The mechanism of low temperature stress in the fruit ripening obstacles of the banana fruit is revealed
The mechanism of the maturity barrier of the banana fruit caused by low temperature stress is revealed

On November 15, "Plant Physiology" published the latest research results of Professor Li Xueping's group from the College of Horticulture, South China Agricultural University
    .

This study reveals the molecular mechanism of the interaction between the ethylene F-box protein EBF1 and the transcription factor ABI5-like to regulate the low temperature stress causing the ripening obstacle of the banana fruit, which provides a theoretical basis for improving the storage and preservation technology of the banana fruit

The research work was funded by the National Banana Industry System, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Guangdong Banana Pineapple Industry System, and the Pearl River Talent Program
    .

The pink banana is an important characteristic banana, which has typical respiratory jump characteristics after harvest
    .

Although low temperature storage and transportation can delay the maturation and senescence of many fruits, low temperature stress (the storage and transportation temperature or the field growth temperature is too low) will cause the maturity of the banana fruit.

Xueping Li's research group has been engaged in the research and development of fruit and vegetable ripening regulation and fresh-keeping technology, and has made a series of important progress in the ripening mechanism of tropical and subtropical fruits and vegetables such as banana and papaya, and their regulation and fresh-keeping technology
    .

Previous studies have found that Fanjiao EBF1 interacts with the transcription factor NAC67-like to promote the degradation of fruit starch

In the research, Li Xueping's research team found that the gene and protein expression of EBF1 and ABI5-like in Fenbanana are closely related to the maturity disorder (abnormal degradation of starch and cell wall) in Fenbanana fruit caused by low temperature stress
    .

    ABI5-like positively regulates 5 starch degradation genes ( BAM7 , BAM8 , PWD1 , GWD1 and ISA2 ) and 5 cell wall degradation genes ( EXP-A8 , XYL23-like , PL8 , UDP1 and XYL32 ).

    BAM7 BAM8 PWD1 GWD1 ISA2 EXP-A8 XYL23-like PL8 UDP1 XYL32

The study found that EBF1 in Fenya has different functions from tomato and Arabidopsis homologous EBF1/2, which is positively correlated with fruit maturation.
It does not degrade ABI5 protein by ubiquitination and does not participate in the ubiquitination and degradation process of EILs
    .

This study clarified for the first time that the ethylene signaling factor EBF1 and the ABA signaling transcription factor ABI5-like protein interact to jointly regulate the ripening and softening of the banana fruit
