Portugal and Morocco will hold a public tender
for a project to build an undersea cable linking the two countries, following the completion of a technical and financial feasibility study in early 2019, a senior Portuguese official said on Monday.

In 2015, the two countries agreed on plans to build an undersea cable connecting the two countries, and in 2016 a feasibility study was launched to reach 1,000 megawatts
    of transmission capacity.

Portugal's national energy minister, Joao Galamba, told Reuters that the two governments intend to issue invitations
to tender immediately after the feasibility study.

"Both governments are firmly committed to this project," Joao Galamba said
during an energy conference in Skhirat, near the capital Rabat.

The project, which is scheduled to be operational by 2030, is estimated to cost between 600 million and 700 million euros, with funds from Europe and Africa expected to cover the costs
    .

The submarine cable project is Morocco's second connection project with Europe
    .
Since 1997, the North African country has been connected to Spain's grid
    via a 700-megawatt cable.

"Electricity trade will go in two directions according to our demand," Galamba said, "at first Portugal will export a little more than Morocco, but in a few years the opposite
    will be true.
    " ”

The 250-kilometer (156-mile) undersea cable connecting Morocco and Portugal is designed to encourage the development of renewable energy
    in both countries.
