a new Study in Japan has found that the onset of a subsystic schizophrenia is linked to the excessive production of hydrogen sulfide in the brain, a key protease responsible for catalyzing the production of hydrogen sulfide. Studies have shown that levels of this enzyme in a person's hair follicles can be used as a biomarker to detect schizophrenia.
the Japanese Institute of Science and Chemistry and other institutions published the paper in the online edition of the European Journal of Molecular Biology Organization Molecular Medicine. They hope the new findings will help understand the causes of schizophrenia and provide ideas for developing new drugs to treat schizophrenia.
study in mice, researchers found that a protease called MPST overextended in the brains of mice with symptoms of schizophrenia, which catalyzes the production of hydrogen sulfide. Tests showed that hydrogen sulfide levels were indeed much higher in mice with schizophrenia symptoms than in normal laboratory mice. Further experiments showed that schizophrenia symptoms improved significantly in mice after the gene encoding MPST was removed.
analysis of human samples by the team found that the expression level of the MPST gene in the brain was significantly higher after death in patients with schizophrenia, and that the level of protease in the brain was associated with the severity of pre-life clinical symptoms. The researchers also tested sac samples from more than 150 patients with schizophrenia and found that their MPST-related messenger RNA (mRNA) expression levels were much higher than normal, suggesting that MPST levels in the sacs could be used as a biomarker for schizophrenia.
