A nuclear power plant in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates has been connected to the country's power grid
, according to the Emirates News Agency.
Specifically, the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant No.
1 nuclear reactor, located in the UAE's westernmost desert on the border with Saudi Arabia, officially began exporting electricity
to the grid.
The Emirates news agency also released a photo of
employees working in the control room of the nuclear power plant.
According to the introduction, the Barakah nuclear power plant has four reactors, which authorities say will meet about 25% of the UAE's energy needs
once it is operating at full capacity.
The $20 billion plant, the first in the Arabian Peninsula, will provide cleaner electricity to millions of residents and help reduce the oil-rich country's dependence on fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions by 21 million tons a year, equivalent to the carbon emissions of 3.

Nuclear power plant operator ENEC said it would begin a gradual increase in power, known as Power Boost Testing (PAT), and once completed, Unit 1 would be delivered
at full capacity.
