A compound found in olive oil can prevent brain cancer, a study suggests.
the study was published in Journal of Molecular Biology.
oleic acid is a single unsaturated Omega-9 fatty acid that is also a major ingredient in olive oil.
study of ulic acid has shown that it stimulates the formation of a cellular molecule that functions to prevent the formation of proteins that cause cancer.
team says it's not clear whether eating olive oil in your diet will prevent brain cancer.
, however, their study points to the possibility of preventing the brain from being based on olive oil.
scientists analyzed the effects of ulic acid on cell molecules called miR-7, which exists and is active in the brain and inhibits tumor formation.
they found that ulic acid prevents a cell protein called MSI2 from stopping the production of miR-7, while olive oil supports the production of miR-7, which helps prevent tumor formation.
researchers made these findings in tests of human cell extracts and living cells.
Gracjan Michlewski said: "While we can't say for sure that olive oil in the diet can prevent brain cancer, our findings do suggest that lytic acid promotes the production of tumor-suppressing cell molecules in laboratory-grown cells.
further research could help determine the role of olive oil in brain health.
