Recently, in a case report published in BMJ Case Reports, a subsidiary of the British Medical Journal (BMJ), a doctor from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine reported a case of migraine successfully cured by dietary intervention so far and maintained for the longest time.
Case: A patient completely cured a severe and devastating migraine for more than 12 years after switching to a whole plant-based diet
    .

Experts in this field call for more research on diet and migraine.
Migraine is the most common type of primary headache in clinical practice.
It first occurs in children and adolescence, and reaches its peak in the middle-aged and adolescent years
    .

Migraine has currently affected more than 1 billion people worldwide, and its clinical symptoms are unilateral throbbing headache lasting 4-72 hours, usually accompanied by photosensitivity, sound sensitivity and/or migraine aura
    .

Researchers said that although drugs can help prevent and relieve, more and more evidence shows that dietary intervention may also be a more effective alternative, and there are no side effects
    .

Earlier, in a case report published in "BMJ Case Reports", doctors from Gisborne, New Zealand described a rare chronic disease patient who also fully recovered from the disease after undergoing the "therapy" of a whole plant-based diet.
It freed it from the pain of eight years
    .

Although the pathophysiology of migraine has not been clearly elucidated, inflammation and oxidative stress are recognized as the cause of cortical dilatation inhibition and trigeminal nerve vascular activation related to the etiology
    .

Researchers believe that dietary interventions can affect migraines through many potential mechanisms
    .

Dark green leafy vegetables are an important source of carotenoids (such as β-carotene).
These phytonutrients have been shown to reduce systemic inflammation and oxidative stress
    .

Therefore, this diet may provide a safe and effective treatment for migraine
    .

Previously, a randomized crossover trial found that a low-fat plant-based diet can reduce the frequency, duration, and need for painkillers of migraines
    .

Let's take a look at this case: the patient is a 60-year-old male who has struggled with frequent migraines for 12.
    5 years
    .

During this period, he has about 4-6 headaches per month, and the monthly headache lasts for 12-18 days
    .

The most severe 6 months before switching to the diet intervention strategy, the monthly headaches increased to 6-8 times, lasting for 18-24 days
    .

His headache was accompanied by photosensitivity, phobia, nausea and vomiting
    .

On a pain scale of 0 to 10, headache is 10-12/10
    .

He has tried all conventional therapies, including prescription drugs, yoga and meditation, and followed the doctor's advice to avoid all potential food inducements (including alcohol, coffee, chocolate, cheese, nuts, etc.
    )
    .

However, his efforts did not reduce the severity and frequency of his headaches, and the pain almost prevented him from working
    .

The patient said: "Most days, I am either having a migraine or recovering from the symptoms of a migraine
    .

Nothing can change it, and I am desperate
    .

" On the doctor’s advice, the patient began to follow.
A diet based on green leafy vegetables, the "daily low inflammation food" (LIFE) diet
    .

This patient ate at least 142 grams of raw or cooked dark green leafy vegetables per day, drank 946 ml of vegetable juice per day, and restricted the intake of whole grains, starchy vegetables, oil and animal protein, especially dairy products and red meat.

    .

During the 2-month follow-up, the patient reported a significant reduction in the frequency of migraine attacks, from about 18-24 migraine days per month to 1 day per month, and the duration and severity of the attacks were reduced
    .

In the second month after starting the LIFE diet, the patient stopped all migraine medications
    .

After 3 months, his migraine had completely disappeared
    .

During 3 to 6 months, patients have challenged themselves with certain foods
    .

When he consumes atypical inducing foods such as egg whites, salmon or iced tea, he will have headache attacks with an intensity of 4-5/10, but the duration is very short and does not require medication
    .

So far, this patient has not experienced a migraine attack for more than 7 years and does not remember when the last headache was
    .

Serum tests found that his β-carotene level reached a peak of 175 µg/dL at the 5th month and remained above 150 µg/dL for the next 7.
    5 years
    .

Two previous studies found that the LIFE diet significantly increased patients' β-carotene levels and significantly reduced systemic inflammation as measured by high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP)
    .

Interestingly, after the patient started LIFE diet to reduce his migraine frequency, he also achieved relief of allergies and improved blood lipid levels, and no longer needed to take antihistamine and cholesterol-lowering salbutamol and rosuvastatin
    .

Overall, patients reported that their quality of life and physical function have improved since starting the LIFE diet
    .

The doctor who treated this patient suggested that it might be worthwhile to adopt a plant-based diet to relieve the symptoms of chronic migraines
    .

Gunter Kuhnle, a professor of nutrition and food science at the University of Reading in the UK who was not involved in this case, said: "This is just a case report, so this finding cannot be promoted
    .

    Migraine is a debilitating disease.
It is important to find a cure.
    And ways to control it
    .

Diet plays an important role in the management of many diseases, and some foods are thought to cause migraines
    .

” Duane Mellor, a registered dietitian and teaching researcher at Aston University School of Medicine who was also not involved in this case The doctor said: "This case is very interesting, but it is not yet a solution for all migraine sufferers
    .

However, the dietary plan adopted by the patient largely conforms to the dietary recommendations of many countries, including eating more vegetables, especially dark green.
    Vegetables with leaves
    .

" Last week, another study published in "BMJ Global Health" showed that the global trade in red meat and processed meat products has increased dramatically with diet-related non-communicable diseases in the past 30 years.
