The Pakistani government signed a $100 million agreement with the World Bank to support the Sindh Solar Project, which aims to help develop solar energy
in Sindh province in the southeast of the country.
The government said the district government in Sindh would contribute another $5 million
.
According to the World Bank, the Sindh solar project began in 2013 and is expected to be developed
in 2023.
The project is divided into four steps: construction of large-scale solar power plants through competitive tenders; procurement and deployment of distributed generation PV; Development of residential off-grid solar in areas without grid access; and strengthen transmission infrastructure and technical assistance to support project design and implementation
.
Of the total budget, $40 million should be spent on large-scale photovoltaics, which is expected to reach 400 MW of capacity; $25 million for distributed generation, with plans for about 20 megawatts; Off-grid power generation and transmission infrastructure and technical assistance accounted for $30 million and $5 million
, respectively.
World Bank Country Director Illango Patchamuthu said: "These projects will meet Sindh's energy needs through solar power generation and support electricity trade
between Pakistan and Afghanistan along regional connectivity and private sector development through the Khyber Pass Corridor.
