The Philippine Ministry of Agriculture (DA) said it was considering raising the possibility of raising the minimum amount of pork (MAV) to increase domestic supply and stabilize retail prices, the Business Mirror reported on January 18.
Agriculture Minister Dar said DA was considering increasing the current MAV of pork from 5.4 tonnes to 150,000 tonnes.
Chen, president of the Philippine Pork Producers' Federation, said pig farmers now had doubled their production costs and imports were needed to make up for the shortfall in pork supplies.
the USDA had earlier forecast that Philippine pork production could fall 3.6 per cent this year to 1.075 million tonnes, the lowest level in 20 years, as a result of the ASF.
philippine pork imports are likely to grow 33 percent to 200,000 tons this year to make up for a shortage of 1.274 million tons of pork.
