The Portuguese government is preparing an economic and financing study and preparing a model contract for the construction of a project aimed at building a new submarine cable to replace the submarine cable system
connecting mainland Portugal with the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira, according to the local Portuguese news agency LUSA.
According to the Official Official Gazette, the investment in the replacement of infrastructure, including submarine cable stations and the renovation of the provision of supplementary services, will cost 118.
9 million euros, with new infrastructure scheduled for commissioning in 2024 (Azores) and 2025 (Madeira).
To this end, IP Telecom, which is responsible for the investment, must launch an international public tender by the end of 2020 and award a contract for the installation of the building by the end of 2021 for a period of two years
for physical installation.
The new submarine cable system will have six pairs of fibre optic cables, complementing the existing fibre optic cable infrastructure
connecting Madeira.
Earlier this month, Alexandre Fonseca, chairman of Altice Portugal, revealed that the company would evaluate the conditions for
a public tender.
While the executive said the company was willing to "collaborate" on the project, he also noted that the country's regulatory environment is "not good for investment.
