Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) is a general term for fetal growth and development disorders in the mother's womb, IUGR animals are manifested as growth retardation, abnormal development, disease resistance and decreased meat quality, early morbidity and mortality are high
    .
About 25% of newborn piglets in pig production die
    as a result of IUGR.
Due to the incomplete understanding of the growth regulation mechanism of IUGR pigs, IUGR is still a major problem
    facing the pig industry.

Recently, the scientific research team of Kong Xiangfeng, Research Center for Healthy Breeding and Agro-Animal Husbandry of Livestock and Poultry at the Institute of Subtropical Agroecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, compared and studied the growth and development, body metabolism and intestinal microecological characteristics of normal-weight pigs and IUGR pigs of different ages or growth stages, and verified by using fecal bacteria transplantation + sterile mice and other technologies, found that IUGR changed the diversity of intestinal flora and its metabolic pathway, resulting in abnormal metabolism of intestinal energy, amino acids and bile acids, which hindered the late growth and development of IUGR pigs
。 By adding bile acids to the diet, it was found that bile acids could improve the liver function and the number of beneficial intestinal bacteria in IUGR piglets, alleviate oxidative damage of the intestinal mucosa, and also improve the barrier function and redox state of the colonic mucosa of IUGR piglets, which was conducive to maintaining intestinal health
    .
The above studies have shown that gut microbes can be used as targets for regulating IUGR, and bile acids play an important role
in improving nutritional metabolism and maintaining intestinal health in IUGR pigs.

The above research results have been published
in journals such as J Anim Sci Biotechnol, Front Microbiol, Front Nutr, J Appl Microbiol and Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition 。 This research was supported
by the National Natural Science Foundation of China Regional Innovation and Development Joint Fund Key Project (U20A2056), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (31772613), the National Key R&D Program of China (2017YFD0500503) and the Hunan Science and Technology Leading Talent Project (2019RS3022).
