7 billion renewable energy power purchase agreement in South Africa has been blocked and delayed

The General Union of South African Metal Mills and Transform RSA filed court documents blocking the signing
    .
Following a statement by the energy minister last week, the agreement was scheduled to be signed
    on March 13.
A total of 27 renewable energy independent power generation project (REIPPP) contracts are already pending
    .
Now the decision to sign the agreement has been postponed until March 27
    .

South African Energy Minister Jeff Radebe said in a new statement that the dramatic late-stage intervention saw South Africa's national electricity Eskom, two unions and the Ministry of Electricity argue late into the night
    .
Although the court could not provide a legal reason for not being able to sign the contract on March 13, the signature will be extended until March 27, 2018
, when the documents are finally submitted to the court.

"The Department of Energy will continue to vigorously uphold the right of domestic consumers to cost-effective, clean energy that will bring much-needed investment and jobs to South Africa, especially for women and youth, and small business entrepreneurship opportunities
    in rural communities.
" This will also ensure economic transformation and access
    to the mainstream.
    The statement said
    .

The two unions argue that Eskom now has enough generating capacity and that the extra renewable energy will only force the closure of coal-fired power plants, causing job losses
    .

The long-delayed REIPPPP will create 61,600 jobs, 95 per cent of which will come from South Africa
, according to the power ministry.

The long-term plan began in August 2016, when Eskom said it would not sign any contracts under the REIPPPP scheme, saying it would take time to evaluate its power generation assets
    .
In March 2017, that impasse appeared to have been broken, with Radebe's remarks last week appearing to mark the end
    of the standoff.
