a new U.S. study has found that chemicals found in baby wipes can damage the skin's surface. Exposure to these chemicals increases the risk of food allergies if the child itself already carries the mutant genes associated with damaged skin barriers.
researchers from Northwestern University and Indiana University published their paper in
issue of the American Journal. They say genetic mutations associated with damage to the skin barrier, chemicals such as skin contact with baby wipes in the environment, and exposure to food allergens have all contributed to food allergens in childhood and adage.
In the experiment, they exposed newborn mice carrying genes associated with damaged skin barriers to the chemical sodium laurel sulfate contained in baby wipes and exposed their skin to food and dust allergens three to four times over a two-week period for 40 minutes. After eating eggs or peanuts, the mice developed allergic reactions on the skin and intestines of allergens and severe allergic symptoms such as hypothermia.
the researchers explained that the surface skin is made of lipids, and that the chemical sodium sulfate contained in baby wipes can damage the lipid barrier in the skin. Exposure to these chemicals increases the risk of food allergies if the child itself already carries the mutant genes associated with damaged skin barriers.
to reduce the risk of food allergies, the researchers recommend that parents limit the use of baby wipes and thoroughly wash the baby's soap droplets or bath fluids with water during the bath to reduce exposure to sodium sulfate. Family members should also wash their hands before touching the baby to reduce the baby's skin exposure to food and dust allergens. (Source: Xinhua News Agency, Li Wei
