Recently, Tian Ying and Gao Yu's research team from the School of Public Health, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine published an article titled "Association of Maternal Exposure to Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluroalkyl Substances with Infant Growth from Birth to 12 Months" in the 29th issue of Science of the Total Environment .

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a kind of man-made compounds with carbon-fluorine bonds, which are hydrophobic and oleophobic.

Animal experiments have found that exposure to PFASs during pregnancy affects the development of offspring, such as miscarriage, reduced survival after birth, and delayed growth and development

This study is based on the Shanghai Birth Cohort (SBC) established in the Shanghai area.

Among the 10 PFASs tested, the increase in the concentration of perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA) was negatively correlated with the length-for-age Z score (LAZ) of infants (β=-0.

Table 1 The relationship between exposure to PFASs during pregnancy and infant growth and development

Figure 1 After gender stratification, the relationship between maternal PFASs levels during pregnancy and the growth and development of boys and girls

This study was based on a large-sample prospective birth cohort, and assessed the growth and development of infants from birth to 12 months.

This research has been funded by the National Key Research and Development Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China
