Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company (BSCCL) said it has received proposals from two Singaporean companies, SingTel and SigMar, to participate in establishing a connection
for the country's third submarine cable.

Mashiur Ra?, Managing Director of BSCCL? HMAN said the state-owned enterprise is evaluating the proposals from a financial and technical perspective because it has already received approval
    from policymakers.

SingTel's proposal is to build a SEA-ME-WE6 submarine cable system connecting Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe, from Singapore to France, with a bandwidth of 5 terabits per second (TBPS) for a total investment of $72 million
    .

    The second proposal provides 12.
4 Tbps bandwidth through the Singapore-Myanmar Submarine Cable (SigMar) system, which could be extended to the Bay of Bengal if Bangladesh joins the
    consortium.
The project cost $65 million, while BSCCL needed to build about 1,045 kilometers
    at its own expense.

According to estimates, SingTel will complete its project in 2023 and SigMar in 2022
    .

Ra?? HMAN said, "Based on our estimates, we have a time requirement
    .
By 2023, the country's bandwidth needs will exceed 6 Tbps, while our current capacity is less than 3 Tbps
    .
Therefore, we need to develop channels to get higher bandwidth
    before that.

    Bangladesh currently consumes around 1.
2 Tbps, of which 670 gigabits per second are provided by BSCCL and the rest by India
    .
Ra?? "So I think demand is going to be much higher than estimated, and we need to be prepared
    for that.
    " ”

The BSCCL has presented both proposals in a recent meeting with Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy, the Prime Minister's ICT Adviser, and decided to evaluate and make a decision
on the proposals over the next two months.

Ra?? For now, the SEA-ME-WE 6 has greater regional coverage, but its bandwidth capacity will be smaller
    , hman said.
SigMar has the ability to meet the country's need
    to connect with Singapore.
On the other hand, BSCCL has experience with the first two submarine cable systems in cooperation with the SEA-ME-WE consortium, but SigMar has little experience
    in developing submarine cables.

Bangladesh was connected to the submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 4 in 2006, which was the first time Bangladesh was connected to the international submarine cable system, and in 2017 it was connected
to the second submarine cable, SEA-ME-WE 5.

In early 2018, the government asked BSCCL to begin its process of establishing links with a third seabed link, and the company contacted several consortiums to seek
    proposals.
Another reason to look for another undersea cable is to look for another submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 4 is approaching its 20-year useful life
    , a BSCCL official said.
