Researchers in the United States use laser surface treatment to prepare high-quality carbon fiber, a process that is low-cost and flexible because removing the surface material layer by laser before bonding improves the performance of the contacts and offers the possibility for high-volume automated use. According to China Coatings Onlineexperts, recently developed by researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for automotive lightweight carbon fiber composites and a variety of other materials bonding laser surface treatment process, is expected to replace the grinding sand, steel blast sand and environmentally harmful solvents of hand-treated material surface technology, will help to provide higher quality carbon fiber.
our technology is much superior to traditional surface treatments," says Sabau, a researcher and head of the research and development team at ORNL. This approach increases the use of this lightweight, high-strength material in the automotive industry, while reducing the weight of cars and trucks by 750 pounds, given that it significantly reduces the cost of carbon fiber polymer composites. "The surface treatment of aluminum and carbon fiber polymer composites is a key step in the bonding process and will directly affect the quality of the seams. During the production rolling process, aluminum surfaces tend to form layers of oil and other contaminants, while carbon fiber surfaces often contain many release materials.
these surface contaminants can affect surface energy and bonding quality, so removing them is critical. Sabau explains. In addition, lasers penetrate the top layer of resin, allowing individual carbon fibers to be exposed for direct bonding to the adhesive, resulting in higher quality bonding, according to China Coatings Onlineexperts. Compared to conventionally prepared baseline connectors, connectors prepared on the surface of the laser structure absorb about 200% more energy. Sabau says the process also doubles the energy absorption of connectors and can therefore be used for collision safety devices and armored vehicles.
