The United States will build six nuclear power plants in India

The United States and India have agreed to enhance security and civilian nuclear cooperation, including the construction of six nuclear power plants
in India, according to a joint statement issued by the United States and India.

After a two-day meeting, the two countries reached an agreement
in recent days.
"The two sides commit to enhance bilateral security and civil nuclear cooperation, including helping India build six nuclear power plants," the joint statement said
.
But it did not provide further details
on the nuclear power plant project.

For more than a decade, the two countries have been discussing the supply
of U.
S.
nuclear reactors to India, the world's third-largest oil buyer.

But a long-standing hurdle is the need to bring India's liability rules into line with international norms, which requires operators, not nuclear power plant manufacturers, to bear the cost of
any accidents.

Pittsburgh-based Westinghouse Electric has been negotiating to build reactors
in India for years.
The project was questioned
when Westinghouse filed for bankruptcy in 2017 after overspending on U.
S.
reactor costs.

Brookfield Asset Management of Canada acquired Westinghouse Electric from Toshiba in August 2018

Last April, Westinghouse received strong support from U.
S.
Energy Secretary Rick Perry, whose India project envisages the construction of six AP1000 reactors
in Andhra Pradesh.

The 2016 announcement of the reactor's build follows the 2008 U.
S.
-India civilian nuclear deal
