SubCom, a provider of submarine cable services, and Google recently announced that a contract to design, manufacture and deploy Firmina, a new high-speed submarine cable system
connecting North and South America, has taken effect.
According to reports, the system will extend from the east coast of the United States to Las Storinas, Argentina, and land
in Praia Grande and Punta del Este (Uruguay) in Brazil.
Designed as a 12-core fiber pair, Firmina will improve access to Google services for users in South America
.
Under the contract, the fabrication of the cables and equipment required for the system will take place in 2021/2022 at SubCom's manufacturing campus in Newington (New Hampshire, USA), with the main laying installation scheduled for summer 2022
.
According to the plan, the Firmina submarine cable system is expected to be put into operation
by the end of 2023.
