The Washington D.
C.
City Council on Tuesday passed a landmark renewable energy bill that would require the city to require all energy on its grid to come from renewable sources
by 2032.
As a result of this new policy, the city will implement new incentives to promote the growth of renewable energy in the region, as well as new efficiency standards and increased
carbon fees for natural gas and other sources.
Earlier this year, California approved a new mandate from the state Senate to raise state clean energy standards to 100 percent by 2045, up from the original 2030 goal of 50 percent
.
The President and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) issued a statement, "The D.
C.
City Council has just passed the strongest clean energy legislation
in the country.
The option to move to 100% renewable energy is not only feasible, but can be achieved faster than many realize, and the D.
C.
is gaining a clear lead
.
This historic piece of legislation could serve as a model
for other countries and cities seeking to establish clean energy targets.

"It's worth noting that the bill helps ensure that all residents of the borough have access to solar energy, including low-income residents, which is our top priority
," he said.
Whereas, the majority of SEIA's team lives and works in the D.
C.
region, including some employees
dedicated to advocating for and strengthening this legislation.
This milestone is particularly meaningful
to us.
