According to news reports, the World Bank has signed a financing agreement with Pakistan to allocate $100 million for the Sindh solar project to provide renewable energy and electricity supply to the people of the province, whose electricity access rate is alarmingly
low.
The project will support three segments of solar power in Sindh, including: utility-scale, distributed generation and homes
, according to the official statement.
The statement said the utility-scale segment included the development of solar parks to support private sector investment and the launch of Pakistan's first bid for solar power, starting with a 50-megawatt pilot solar auction
.
It added that distributed electricity includes at least 20 MW of distributed solar PV panels on rooftops and other available space
around public sector buildings in Karachi, Hyderabad and other parts of the province.
The project, which aims to provide a solar home system to 200,000 households in areas with low or no electricity supply, costs $105 million
.
It further said IDA would provide $100 million in financing for the project, while the Sindh government would provide $5 million
.
The project will purportedly introduce and demonstrate international best practices through renewable energy auctions, reduce the overall cost of solar deployment, create sustainable business models for potential replication, build institutional and private sector capacity, and identify opportunities for future renewable energy deployments to address grid integration
.
